Kamala Harris poked fun at herself during a surprise Saturday Night Live appearance alongside SNL mainstay Maya Rudolph.
At the end of the cold open, Harris appeared as a “mirror image” of herself, played by Maya Rudolph. The segment humorously highlighted Donald Trump’s recent rally appearance in a sanitation vest as well as Joe Biden’s frequent verbal slip-ups.
Rudolph’s Harris pondered, “I wish I could talk to someone who’s been in my shoes. You know, a Black, South Asian woman running for president. Preferably from the Bay Area.”
The audience erupted in cheers when she was revealed sitting across from Rudolph for the show’s cold open. Harris smiled, saying, “You and me both, sister.”
She then took a playful jab at Trump, saying, “I’m just here to remind you that you’ve got this. Because you can do something your opponent can’t—you can open doors.” This was a nod to Trump’s recent struggle to open a door on a garbage truck while speaking to reporters, a stunt highlighting Biden’s comment that Trump’s supporters were “garbage.”
Rudolph teased Harris about her unique laugh, prompting Harris to ask, “I don’t really laugh like that, do I?” To which Rudolph replied, “A little bit.”
The skit then flowed into a playful series of rhymes centered around Harris’ name. “The American people want to stop the chaos,” Rudolph said, with Harris adding, “And end the drama-la.”
Rudolph continued, “With a cool new stepmom-ala. Get back in our pajama-las. And watch a rom-com-ala,” as the two celebrated their “belief in the promise of America.” To wrap things up, Rudolph declared, “I’m going to vote for us,” to which Harris inquired, “Any chance you’re registered in Pennsylvania?”
“Nope, I am not,” Rudolph responded.
“Well, it was worth a shot,” Harris replied before they both announced, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
The appearance drew ire from Trump’s campaign as well as a federal official who said the NBC show may have violated the FCC’s Equal Time rule.
“The purpose of the rule is to avoid exactly this type of biased and partisan conduct – a licensed broadcaster using the public airwaves to exert its influence for one candidate on the eve of an election,” tweeted Brendan Carr after Harris’ appearance came to light.
Jason Miller, a senior advisor for Trump’s campaign, told the Fox News Channel that Saturday Night Live did not invite Trump to appear on the show.
