It didn’t take a football savant to realize that Kadarius Toney had a horrendous night Thursday, but now there’s a statistic to back it up, too.
Following a nightmarish performance in which the former Giants wide receiver dropped three crucial passes, Toney received a 29.7 receiver grade from Pro Football Focus, the worst grade handed out to a pass-catcher since 2018.
As the Chiefs lost 21-20 to the Lions in a surprising upset without stars Travis Kelce and Chris Jones, Toney — who the Giants selected No. 20 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft — was relied upon by Patrick Mahomes to pick up some of the receiving slack.
But it couldn’t have gone worse for Toney, whose drop in the first quarter deflected the ball directly into Lions rookie Brian Branch’s hands for a pick-six.
With 2:25 left in the game, Toney’s butterfingers struck again when he missed a wide-open opportunity when Mahomes’ pass hit him in the hands.
The receiver was targeted five times and caught one pass for just one yard.

The Giants gave up on the Toney experiment last season when they dealt the speedy wideout to the Chiefs for a third-round and fifth-round pick.
Toney has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, playing in just 20 games over as he kicks off his third NFL season.
Despite his underperformance on Thursday, Toney still has a believer in his quarterback.

“I have trust in [Toney],” Mahomes said after the game, per ESPN. “He missed a lot of training camp, and obviously he wanted to play and fought [during] rehab hard so he could play and stuff’s not always going to go your way.”
Toney deleted X, formerly Twitter, after Thursday night’s disaster, after a bizarre feud with a Giants fan and a new wave of disparaging comments.
