Kadarius Toney won’t be able to drop any passes or commit any back-breaking penalties this week.
The polarizing Chiefs receiver was ruled out for the team’s Christmas Day clash against the Raiders with a hip injury.
Toney did not practice all week.
He’s come under immense criticism in recent weeks for repeated mistakes that have cost the Chiefs and seemingly enraged superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
He was flagged for lining up offsides late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Bills on Dec. 10.
The penalty negated what would have been a go-ahead touchdown, and also one of the coolest plays in recent memory.
Tight end Travis Kelce caught a pass from Mahomes and subsequently lateraled the ball to Toney, who sprinted into the end zone.
But the play didn’t count, as Toney lined up egregiously offsides.
Both Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid ripped the officials after the game for the call, and were fined a combined $150,000 for their meltdowns.
Days after the penalty, Toney accused the referees of lying about a previous warning for his alignment.
“Whether it was, an inch, two inches, whatever in front of the ball, the referee got a job to let me know,” Toney said.
“He didn’t make no effort. You watch the video, he didn’t make no effort to say anything about no alignment. So apparently, he wanted to do that regardless. But like I said, we’re just going back to the details and just make sure we fine print everything.”
Just one week later, Toney dropped an easy pass from Mahomes, letting it bounce off his hands right to Jahlani Tavai for an interception during the Chiefs’ 27-17 win over the Patriots on Dec. 17.
Mahomes began fuming when he got back to the sideline and was visibly upset after the play.
Toney, a former first-round pick by the Giants who was traded to the Chiefs midseason last year, has been marred by injuries his entire career.
He’s already missed time this year with toe and ankle injuries, and now adds a hip injury to the list.
He’s recorded just 27 receptions for 169 receiving yards and a touchdown this year.
