The Mets season started in disaster on Opening Day, and first pitch is still hours away. 

Justin Verlander was placed on the IL with a low grade teres major strain, the team announced Thursday, just hours before it was set to open the 2023 season against the Marlins. 

He will continue throwing at “moderate intensity,” the team said.

Verlander will undergo a rescan of the injury in a week. 

The 40-year-old signed with the Mets this offseason on a two-year, $86.6 million deal to pair with co-ace Max Scherzer atop the team’s rotation.
