NextImg:Justin Verlander could rejoin Mets rotation after smooth rehab outing

Justin Verlander had no apparent issues in his rehab start with Double-A Binghamton on Friday as he comes back from a teres major strain — near the shoulder — that has sidelined him since spring training.

Verlander threw 4 ⅔ scoreless innings and 69 pitches in what could be his only rehab outing before making his Mets debut in what would be a much-needed boost to a battered rotation that is also without the suspended Max Scherzer and the injured Carlos Carrasco (elbow) and Jose Quintana (rib).

Verlander, who threw consistently in the mid-90s in Friday’s outing, could return Wednesday or Thursday in Detroit.

It will be his first start for the Mets after the 40-year-old signed a two-year, $86 million contract during the offseason following his Cy Young season with Houston last year.

He’ll likely have a pitch count of about 80 with Scherzer anticipated back on Monday against the Braves from his ban for using a sticky substance.

Scherzer threw a four-inning simulated game Wednesday.

Carrasco received an injection last week to treat his elbow injury, while Quintana is progressing, but is not close to joining the rotation.
