It isn’t getting any easier for Justin Thomas to stomach that loss.
Following a gut-wrenching missed chip shot Sunday at the Wyndham Championship, in which he almost sunk for a birdie that would have saved his season, the two-time major champion was eliminated from the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time since his rookie season in 2014.
“Can use adversity as an opportunity to shy away from a challenge, or take it head on. Was a tough season for me, but I actually had fun battling it out and playing golf this week,” Thomas wrote on Twitter. “It’s why we play. Beyond gutted to miss the playoffs, but I’m proud of how hard I fought #onward.”
Standing in front of the green on the 18th hole, Thomas pitched an on-target chip shot toward the pin and the ball took three bounces before bouncing off the bottom of the pin and staying out, denying Thomas a chance at a birdie.
After that latest blow in what’s been a challenging year, the American fell on his back and covered his eyes in disbelief.
Thomas ultimately shot a 68 in the final round, finishing tied for 12th at 11-under at Wyndham — which placed him just outside the cutoff for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

He finished at 71st in the standings in points, eight points behind Ben Griffin, who rounded out the top 70 to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
“It would have been a lot more incredible if it would have gone in,” Thomas said after the round.

“I did my part … I played the best I could and I fought as hard as I could and shot the lowest I possibly could. I just have to just hope that somehow it’s good enough.”
It was an uncharacteristic year for the 2017 FedEx Cup champion, who has missed five cuts in his last seven starts and posted some truly brutal outings at majors this year.
Thomas did receive support from one notable fan after his brutal loss: Pat McAfee.
“Hell yeah JT… excited to watch your career from here on. Gonna be LEGENDARY,” McAfee replied to Thomas’ tweet Sunday.
