Observations from the Jets’ training camp on Monday.
It was an active practice for Sauce Gardner. The star cornerback had multiple pass breakups on plays intended for Garrett Wilson. Gardner got the better of the standout receiver Monday.
Justin Fields’ first pass was perfect, a rope of a throw to Wilson on a crossing pattern. He completed just three more throws in 15 tries the rest of the way in another forgettable afternoon for the new starting quarterback. He was frequently late or long on targets. Wilson didn’t help his former college teammate — the standout receiver had two drops.
With extended reps, quarterback Adrian Martinez had a bad day. He lost two fumbles on botched snaps and was inaccurate. Martinez, in his second year with the Jets, is battling undrafted free agent Brady Cook to be the team’s No. 3 quarterback.

QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) and TE Mason Taylor (ankle) didn’t practice. WR Xavier Gipson (shoulder), OG John Simpson (back), DT Quinnen Williams (calf) and CB Kris Boyd (shoulder) are all out this week. S Malachi Moore (oblique) could return to practice in the next few days.
