NextImg:Justin Fields’ fumble problem torpedoes his Steelers preseason debut

Justin Fields’ chances of taking the Steelers’ starting quarterback job took a hit on Friday.

The former Bears quarterback fumbled two snaps and was sacked twice during his preseason debut against the Texans in Pittsburgh,

“We were just shooting ourselves in the foot,” Fields said, per ESPN. “Fumbled snap, I think all three phases, so we can definitely be better in that part. And I think the snapping part, we just got to be on the same page. I’ll put that on me to just be on the same page and know who’s in at center or know how to adjust and what I need to do.”

Fields threw for 67 yards, completing 6-of-7 passes across three drives, but the botched snaps overshadowed his highly anticipated debut in yellow and black.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was complimentary of Fields’ performance aside from the fumbles, although the near-turnovers took away from the positives he saw.

“I thought he did some nice things,” Tomlin said. “But obviously he was a component of the C-Q exchange, and from my perspective that’s dual responsibility on the center and the quarterback. It negated a lot of good things going on in those first couple of drives.”

The fourth-year signal-caller is currently slated to be the backup to Russell Wilson after spending the majority of his first three seasons as the starter in Chicago.

Fields started the preseason opener over Wilson after the nine-time Pro Bowler suffered a calf injury at the start of training camp.

Tomlin maintained in July that “nothing has changed” in terms of the hierarchy of the Steelers’ quarterback room and that Wilson was still in “pole position” for the starting job, as he has stated since the pair came to Pittsburgh in early March.
