NextImg:Justice for 'Laid'! Peacock cancels Stephanie Hsu's deadly funny rom-com after one season

Laid

Stephanie Hsu‘s well-received Peacock rom-com series Laid has been canceled. (And the Decider team is seriously bummed about it!)

Deadline reports Peacock canceled the series after it failed to make the Nielsen streaming rankings or generate enough buzz.

Laid premiered on Peacock in December 2024 where the eight-episode season was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews.

The fresh romantic comedy starred Hsu as Ruby Yao, a self-absorbed woman who learns all of the people she’s had sex with are tragically dying, one by one. Ruby sets out to warn the others. But it proves to be an ugly wakeup call as she’s forced to realize the fault in many of her failed relationships and hook-ups lies with her. Though she and her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet) are convinced this is the work of a crazed stalker, their messy investigation – and a major twist in the season finale – reveals something bigger might be afoot.

The big reveal in the Season 1 finale set the stakes even higher for Laid Season 2.

As Ruby grappled with her troubled dating life and the trail of bodies left in its wake, she also debated getting back in touch with her estranged father (François Chau), which makes it all the more shocking when he suddenly appears at her door in the season finale.

It turns out that the curse that Brad and the witch placed on her was not what caused all of her former lovers to die. It was actually a generational curse she inherited from her father. This news comes to light after Ruby finally slept with Isaac because she thought she successfully transferred the curse to AJ’s cranky neighbor.

Season 2 was perfectly teed up to provide some closure for viewers. Not only was there a new mystery to solve, but now Ruby has to save hunky Isaac from a brutal and sudden death! There’s also the matter of Ruby’s “sex loophole” Richie (Michael Angarano) who, for some reason, was the only one of her lovers who did not die.

Laid sets itself apart from other romantic comedies with Hsu’s impeccable performance as a complicated young woman whose flaws are seemingly apparent to everyone but herself. Hsu utilizes the same skills that made her a breakout star in Everything Everywhere All At Once as she switches from bubbly and flirty to messy and selfish at the drop of a hat.

Now, fans will never know what was really behind Ruby’s bad luck. Deadline reports it remains to be seen if the series will be shopped around to other streamers, but we are still holding out hope.

All 8 episodes of Laid are available to stream now on Peacock.

The streamer currently is offering a limited one-year premium subscription for $24.99.

Subscribers can also sign up for a premium monthly membership for $7.99 a month. The ad-free Premium Plus plan is also available for $139.99 a year, or $13.99 a month.
