Not everyone was quick to judge Mel Owensviral remark about wishing to date women under 60 on The Golden Bachelor.

The ladies of The View weighed in on last night’s premiere of ABC‘s reality dating spinoff on Thursday morning, as Whoopi Goldberg teased that “the women took him to task over the list of requirements he laid out months ago on a podcast.”

After a clip from The Golden Bachelor Season 2 premiere played, in which Owens asked for forgiveness from the women of the house and highlighted the “privilege” it is to be the Golden Bachelor, the Hot Topics Table discussed whether Owens redeemed himself.

“He did redeem himself. I was a Mel hater after the interview,” Alyssa Farah Griffin admitted. “I just didn’t love—I felt like that’s so classic, that a man saying, ‘Oh, I want women 40-60.’ He wants someone 15 years younger, not even open to someone your own age. But I think he took responsibility.”

Griffin also explained that while women may have an understanding of they age, she thinks “men have no idea.”

“I think his idea of what his peers looked like,” she added, before Sara Haines chimed in, “That’s probably how his mom looked.”

“I mean, no shade to his mom!” Haines immediately clarified. “I meant the generation…Nevermind”

As the audience laughed, Goldberg quipped, “Just leave it alone.”

However, Griffin said Haines was “actually making a good point.”

“I think we’re aging very differently,” she continued. “Whoopi and I talked about this recently. 50 is the new 40, 40 is the new 30, 30 is the new 20. If I put actresses of different ages in front of my husband, he’d have no idea. He’d be off by a decade thinking they’re younger than him. And men just don’t realize we’re all living longer and look better than they have.”

Joy Behar was understanding of Owens, telling The View, “But the point is if I were his age, I would want some guy 45 also. Why not?”

After Behar’s comment earned her applause, Haines said she “didn’t even get mad at him when he said it,” claiming that she’s “never met a man” who hasn’t felt this way.

“I don’t care if he keeps it inside or says it out loud, we all know. I thought it was more a little naive,” she added. “By that I mean not knowing how people age, but also when I met my husband, I didn’t want anyone my age. I wanted ’em all older. And he was five years younger. So I think sometimes life will bring what it wants your way, and you just have to have open eyes and open heart to accept it. So I’m sure he’ll find someone.”

The ladies also had some words about “the Muppet woman”—referring to a contestant named Terri who pulled out a puppet while meeting Owens—but Sunny Hostin also mentioned that “fitness is very important” to Owens in finding a partner, though “there are a lot of fit 66-year-olds.”

“He is one of them. I know plenty of them,” she shared. “So I think I’ll give him a pass for making the comments, but he really learned last night that man, people over 65 are pretty damn good.”

Nonetheless, Goldberg found it “very, very crazy that at this point, people are still making those kind of comments and saying them out loud.”

“You find it where you find it,” she said. “It might be someone who’s a little older than you. It might be somebody who’s younger than you. Why not just say, ‘I want to find somebody who fits with me and who I fit with,’ as opposed to ‘they have to be [a certain age].'”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. The Golden Bachelor premiere is streaming on Hulu.
