No one takes a career blow in stride like Joy Behar.

On Wednesday night’s (Sept. 10) episode of Watch What Happens Live, Behar revealed that Barbara Walters “regretted” firing her from The View twice.

“Barbara fired me at one point,” Behar said of the talk show’s co-creator, who died in December 2022. “She fired me twice, actually.”

“One of the times that she fired me was just because they decided to fire me,” Behar continued. “It had something to do with the Democrat and a Republican. That’s what they told me. So, she sacked me, right? We were planning to tell the story on the air and during the commercial break, she says to me, ‘Tell them you changed your mind.’ I said, ‘Barbara, you just fired me. How am I supposed to change my mind?’ She regretted it.”

Behar, who began her time on The View when it first began airing in 1997, was fired in 2013. She returned to her full-time co-hosting position in 2015, and has remained a part of the Hot Topics panel ever since.

“They didn’t just bring me back,” Behar told host Andy Cohen. “They begged me to come back. Let’s be clear here.”

Behar is typically open about her exit from the hit daytime talk show. During a February 2023 episode of The View, the comedian revealed that she was “happy” to be let go from her job.

“I always have friends where I work. And if I don’t have friends at the job, I will not keep the job,” she said. “When I was fired the last time from this show, people said to me, ‘Were you OK with that?’ And my answer was, ‘I was happy.’ Because all my friends had left already. So there was no reason to stay anymore.”

The comment seemed to offend Whoopi Goldberg, who became The View’s moderator in 2007. However, Behar assured the actress that she was referring to her “backstage friends.”

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
