Despite her interesting comments about actress Sophie Turner on The View earlier this week, Joy Behar has revealed that she didn’t actually know who Turner was before the discussion.
Whether you like it or not, it’s nearly impossible to go anywhere without hearing about the ongoing divorce between Joe Jonas and his estranged wife, Turner. It’s so much of a hot topic that, of course, the ladies of The View had to discuss the latest installment of the drama: Turner stepping out for a highly photographed dinner with friend Taylor Swift this week.
Swift also dated (and had a public break up with) the middle Jo Bro back in 2008, and Behar suggested that they are both “probably trashing Joe Jonas,” though other hosts, including Sara Haines, felt that their friendship could exist outside the context of their shared past lover.
Behar went on, sharing that “mutual hatred” could definitely be the basis for a friendship. She went on to compare this to how fans of Donald Trump are also joined in unison by shared hatred.
After the show aired, Behar sat down with Brian Teta, The View’s executive producer, for a discussion on The View: Behind The Table, a podcast series that delves deeper into the topics introduced on the show.
“We were talking about two women who became friends, Taylor and Sophie, after a mutual breakup with the same guy, and so they became friends,” Behar said. “It’s very often the basis of relationships that two people hate the same person. That reminded me of Trump’s base where they all hate liberals. That is the thing that keeps them together.”

Teta said that the political detour Behar took in the celebrity gossip discussion fits right into her tendency to be the show’s “extrapolator”: “You do like to bring all things back to the things you care about,” he said.
Behar explained that she didn’t know who Turner was before the discussion, and that she’d never seen Game of Thrones.
“I wasn’t that interested in the specific celebrity thing going on. I don’t even know who Sophie Turner is, “ Behar said, then went on to point out that she did, in fact, know who Swift is.
“She basically is rallying the young people to vote, which I think is an incredible achievement if she can get it done,” Behar said.
It’s not surprising that the politically-charged and blunt co-host of the show would riff like this, with her background in comedy.
“I have what you call, I guess, an associative memory. Like one thing that you say makes me free associate to something else,” she said. “Maybe it’s all the years of therapy I’ve had on the couch.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
