NextImg:Josh Donaldson’s boo-worthy Yankees play continues

The booing from Yankee Stadium fans had already started for Josh Donaldson.

Just like Joey Gallo. Just like Aaron Hicks.

Just like anyone who joins the Yankees and underperforms when their numbers — both statistically and monetarily — suggest something different, something better, should happen.

Gallo was traded. Hicks was designated for assignment.

The Yankees, for better or for worse, appear stuck with Donaldson, whose average dipped to .127 with an 0-for-3 line in their 10-2 loss to the Mariners on Thursday.

He also committed a costly error in the third.

“It’s tough, but this is part of playing in New York,” Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo said after the game, when asked about Donaldson navigating this stretch amid the booing crowd. “This is part of the gig, and we want to be at our best every single day. … It’s definitely not a lack of effort.”

When asked about potentially resting Donaldson, similar to how the Yankees rested DJ LeMahieu recently with three off-days, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said “we’ll see” and — it’s something he needs to “talk through.”

“We gotta get a few of our guys rolling,” Boone said. “That’s an important thing for us right now.”

With Donaldson, though, Boone said there are still times when he thinks the third baseman has gotten his “swing off.”

Donaldson flew out to right in the second inning, grounded into a fielder’s choice in the fourth and hit a deep fly ball to center field in the seventh that Boone said he “just missed hitting out of the park.”

“It’s about him being more precise at the ball,” Boone said, “because I do feel like there’s some pitches that he’s in position to impact and kinda going through a stretch of just missing.”

The third-inning error was another low point for Donaldson, too.

Mike Ford bounced a grounder — with an exit velocity of just 45.2 mph — toward Donaldson, and the ball popped out of his glove when he tried to start a double play.

When Eugenio Suarez noticed that no Yankees player had covered third, he tore toward the bag, eventually scoring when German couldn’t collect Donaldson’s throw and it bounced out of play.

Boone elected to defend Donaldson, as well as the other two errors from German and Rizzo, labeling the grounder from Ford a difficult play.

“I get it’s a talking thing there,” Boone said, “but we’re talking about two great defenders on the corner that made a mistake in a game where we’re giving it up.”

For Donaldson, though, the botched grounder just became the latest miscue.

It became the latest mistake that prompted boos.

And it became the latest problem amid a stretch where the former AL MVP — and a piece of this Yankees lineup the front office has publicly supported — hasn’t found many, or any, solutions.
