The free-falling Yankees have lost too many games and now a catcher, too.
Jose Trevino is out for the season and will require surgery for a right wrist tear, he said Friday.
Trevino was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday.
Ben Rortvedt was summoned from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the corresponding move.
Trevino, an All-Star last year, knew he would require surgery at some point on a wrist that has been ailing for months.
But he said the pain has become such that playing through it was no longer an option.
Trevino clearly has been hampered during a down season in which he has posted a .570 OPS and had begun losing playing time to Kyle Higashioka.
Rortvedt and Higashioka likely will be the new Yankees catching duo.
