BOSTON – Jonathan Loaisiga is hurt again.
The Yankees setup man landed back on the injured list Tuesday with right elbow inflammation after missing four months earlier this season for surgery to remove a bone spur from the same elbow.
In between IL stints, Loaisiga did not allow an earned run in his first 12 appearances before getting tagged for five earned runs across his last two outings.
The severity of Loaisiga’s current elbow inflammation was not immediately known.
The Yankees called up veteran reliever Zach McAllister – a 2006 draft pick of the Yankees who last appeared in the majors in 2018 – to take Loaisiga’s spot in the bullpen.
They also transferred Anthony Rizzo (post-concussion syndrome) to the 60-day IL to open a spot on the 40-man roster for McAllister.
Loaisiga has proven to be a talented back-end arm for the Yankees, but one that has too often been injured.
He missed time in each of the last two seasons with right shoulder inflammation (2022) and a right shoulder strain (2021).
He also missed three months in 2019 with another right shoulder strain.
The Yankees bullpen has taken its fair share of hits lately, with Ian Hamilton (groin strain), Keynan Middleton (shoulder inflammation) and Albert Abreu (hamstring strain) also landing on the IL over the last two weeks.
