NextImg:John Sterling says getting hit by foul ball was ‘very good thing’ as video is released

It was the John Sterling video that everyone had been asking for and the update everyone was hoping to hear.

On Sunday, WFAN released the footage of the longtime Yankees radio broadcaster getting hit by a foul ball while calling the final at-bat of the Bombers’ 3-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.

Red Sox third baseman Justin Turner had been squaring off with Clay Holmes when he popped a foul ball back behind the plate.

The video shows the ball appearing to bounce off the desk in front of Sterling and striking the 84-year-old broadcaster right around his left eye

Sterling quickly removed his glasses and briefly clutched his face.

The 84-year-old insisted the blow, which hit him in the eyebrow, didn’t hurt.

“I only said ‘Ow’ [on the call] because that’s what I always say,’’ Sterling said before Sunday’s series finale with the Red Sox. “It wasn’t bad at all. I never thought about not finishing the game.’’

Sterling took a short pause before returning to call the final out of the game at Yankee Stadium.

And he could be seen in the video giving his famed “The Yankees win!” call without any issue.

“I wasn’t going on the IL,’’ Sterling said with a laugh. “I told Aaron Judge that and he laughed.”

The Yankees also released a video on social media before Sunday’s series finale with the Red Sox of Sterling letting everyone know the was OK despite the close call with the foul ball and thanking everyone for the well wishes.

“To all the Yankee fans I am fine,” Sterling said in the video. “It hit me in the head. A lot of muscle up there, so I was OK. And I thank you for all the warm, wonderful, loving thoughts. Anyway, I’m fine. … It produced phone calls and texts from all the people who love me.

“So it really turned out to be a very good thing.”

The clip posted by the all-sports radio station’s Twitter account went up shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday and had already garnered over 73,000 views in less than an hour.

Evening WFAN host Keith McPherson tweeted Sunday “Somebody check on those baseballs” after the video was posted.

Sterling returned this week to the broadcast booth after missing some time due to illness. He was absent for the Yankees’ West Coast trip while under the weather, but it wasn’t described as serious.

Be it Illness or a foul ball, it doesn’t seem like much can keep Sterling out of the booth for too long.
