John Sterling returned to Yankee Stadium and was greeted by a botched rundown from the Bronx Bombers.
Sterling, the legendary 86-year-old who retired as the Yankees’ radio announcer earlier this season, was in the YES Network booth with his former partner Michael Kay during the bottom of the third inning of a game against the Guardians.
Cleveland outfielder Daniel Schneemann was up with men on first and second and two outs and hit a single to right.
Juan Soto fielded the ball and threw it toward home, where it was cut off by first baseman D.J. LeMahieu, who caught Schneemann in a pickle between first and second.
LeMahieu tossed the ball to Anthony Volpe, who threw it back to LaMahieu when Schneemann had bolted back toward first base.
Ultimately, Schneemann realized that nobody was covering second, and made it there quickly.
Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel scored on the play to make it 2-2.
After Kay finished calling the action, Sterling echoed the sentiments of all the Yankees fans watching at home.
“Oh my goodness,” he said in an exasperated tone, and repeated the phrase again for good measure.
Sterling was also reuniting with Suzyn Waldman on the Yankees’ WFAN radio feed in the fourth and fifth innings.
