Writer-actor-producer John Owen Lowe is beyond proud of graduating from Stanford University in 2018 with a degree in science, technology and society. So much so that the prestigious university gets a shout-out in his Instagram bio. “I worked so damn hard to get there,” Lowe, 29, tells Alexa. “SAT prep, GPA, AP classes … the works.” The payoff was worth it, though. “It was so rewarding to be at an institution of that level,” he says. “It helped shape me into the person I am today. So, yeah, it has to be in the bio.”
While Lowe — the son of actor Rob Lowe and his jewelry designer wife, Sheryl — didn’t realize he wanted to get into showbiz while in college, his experiences in the lab helped him co-create, write and star in the comedy “Unstable” for Netflix. He played the son of an eccentric biotech genius, portrayed by his real-life dad. “I didn’t see that coming, but that’s sort of how life works, right? It’s called failing upward!” One major college regret? His wardrobe. “I think I rocked sweats almost every day and rewore the same shirt multiple days in a row,” he confesses.
Now Lowe — who has a house in LA but still spends time with his parents in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara — is developing and writing “God’s Country,” a family drama executive produced by Chris Pratt that Lowe calls “comedy of manners-meets-Shakespeare.” Thankfully, he’s also made a few more wardrobe upgrades since his college days — here’s a look at the styles he gravitates to post-graduation.
“It’s fun but not too flashy, and it tells a story. Also … my mom made it. I have to support Mom always. But I genuinely wear this all the time.”
“Every single time I wear these, I get stopped and asked who makes them and where to buy them. So, here you go.”
“I think my pops wore this first. It’s a classic and it gets the job done every time. Fellas, don’t be out there smelling anything but great … please!”
“I have way too many thrifted vintage shirts, but I can’t help it. I love finding old gems. I probably have 30 to 40, and three of them are Coca-Cola tees. I just think combining styles of the past with some modern elements is fun and cool. I wish I could raid my dad’s closet from the ’80s. I’d go crazy.”
“I am a caffeine fiend. I need it, can’t get enough of it. Blue Bottle Coffee is without a doubt my favorite spot in LA. Trust me, the iced Nola with cold foam is heavenly. But if you aren’t in LA, order their kits.”
“Speaks for itself. Every song is incredible — and it’s great for any mood.”
“Comfortable with just a splash of ‘dad-chic’ fashion that I am rather fond of. Think: Adam Sandler as style inspo.”
“I get sore easily. I’m a fragile man. This thing works out knots, and it’s simple to use.”
“This is easy to learn and super competitive (like me). I guess I’m just a big believer in a fun game with people you love.”
“I am the guy that loses my keys, wallet, phone. It’s a curse. But this little gadget saves my life. I slip it into my wallet and it connects through Bluetooth to the phone. So if I ever leave the wallet behind somewhere, this thing catches it!”
“The messaging in his words, the spiritual suggestions, perspectives on time and self … I think anyone could benefit from giving this a slow read.”
“I’ve been playing piano my entire life. I absolutely adore it. We can’t all have a grand piano in our house, so this is the next best option for now.”
“It’s the only product I know that gives my hair the ‘I just hopped out of the ocean from a great surf session’ look. (Yes, I grew up surfing. I promise I’m not a poser.) It smells great, holds well — love this stuff.”
“These are the comfiest socks out there and socks are the foundation of every outfit. Don’t overlook them!”
