John Goodman is standing by his decision to defend his former co-star Roseanne Barr, whose racist tweets in 2018 led to the cancellation of Roseanne. While he’s unsure if he’d work with her again, the Righteous Gemstones star said he still feels “terrible” about the entire situation.
Five years ago, ABC canceled Roseanne — which aired from 1988 to 1997, before being briefly revived in 2018 — after Barr posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a Black woman who worked under the Obama administration.
Following the decision to cancel the long-running sitcom and start a spinoff series without Barr called The Conners, Goodman — who was “surprised” by the show’s cancellation — told The Sunday Times that he knows “for a fact that she’s not a racist,” before later adding that his TV wife was “going through hell at the time.”
In a recent interview with Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Goodman reflected on his decision to stand up for Barr — and whether or not he regrets doing so.

“No. I remember attending some kind of junket where they saw the pilot, and then the interviews, and it just turned into an attack,” he said. “It made me really uncomfortable witnessing them go after Roseanne.”
He continued, “Yeah, I felt bad for her. And then, yeah… I just feel terrible about the whole thing. You know, we had a great time. And I love her. She’s just her own person.”
As for whether he’d work with the comedian again, Goodman told the outlet, “I don’t know. If she’d liked to… I just don’t know. I miss her. I wish her well.”
The Conners was recently renewed by ABC for a sixth season, which happened after Barr “renounced her financial stake in the show” and it continued without her. Ahead of the spinoff’s premiere in 2018, Goodman further praised his friend during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
“She is missed, definitely. After that many years, it’s like a family. It was very weird doing the first show without her, because she’s my buddy,” he said at the time. “She gave up a lot for us to be able to do the show. I can’t thank her enough.”
