Joe Namath called in to bid a legendary Pittsburgh sports voice adieu on his final show.
Ron Cook announced he was retiring earlier this week after more than 40 years as a writer and over three decades as a radio host.
Cook idolized Namath as they grew up in Beaver Falls, Pa., and was talking about how great it would’ve been to get him on the final show when co-host Joe Starkey patched him in.
“Ron, you’re a good man and I’m glad that we spent this time together,” Namath said on the call.
Others who said goodbye to Cook over the past week included Steelers great “Mean” Joe Greene, Kentucky basketball head coach John Calipari and former Red Sox manager Terry Francona (who was also from nearby).
93.7 The Fan has been Cook’s home since the station’s inception 14 years ago.
“I have been looking forward to this week for a long time, but I have also been dreading it for a long time,” Cook said earlier this week when he announced his retirement, as covered by Barrett Sports Media.
“It’s just time. I dread it because I’m leaving so much behind but I’m looking forward to it because I have so much ahead.”
In addition to radio, Cook was a columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
He is relocating to Fort Myers, Fla.
