Namath had made headlines a week earlier when he staunchly criticized Wilson for his play in the Jets’ 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 3.
This time around he was significantly more complimentary of the former second overall pick in 2021.
“Well, he played well. He played pretty darn good, and that’s what we want to see,” Namath said on Monday’s show.
“Believe me, now I am a Jets fan. I want us to do well. I get fed up whenever something goes wrong, of course, and I’m tired of losing, but Zach did some positive things. We know he has athletic ability. We know he has good feet. He can run around and we know he has a strong arm. And he showed that again. Yeah, he showed it yesterday. But it’s the mistakes that hurt us a bit.”
The Hall of Fame QB and the man who led the Jets to a championship in Super Bowl III blamed the frustration of being a Jets fan for his harsh criticism of Wilson.
He claimed that he never thought New York would ever get rid of Wilson and that “he’s going to improve.”
“He’s going to get better and better and better. I can only hope that,” Namath said.
Wilson had one of the best games of his career in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Wilson completed 28 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns against the defending Super Bowl champs.
Namath was ready to cast Wilson off to sea the last time he appeared on the drive-time radio program on ESPN New York.
“I wouldn’t keep him,” Namath said at the time. “I’ve seen enough of Zach Wilson, all right? I’ve seen enough.”
