NextImg:Joe Mixon gets restructured deal with Bengals as police charge lingers

The Bengals’ embattled running back Joe Mixon appears to be staying in Cincinnati after all.

Mixon, who was rumored to be on the Bengals’ chopping block amid legal troubles, and the team agreed to restructure his contract for the 2023 NFL season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Mixon’s new deal includes a base salary of $5.51 million and an extra $2 million in incentives.

The sixth-year veteran previously had a $9.4 million non-guaranteed salary and represented a $12.8 million cap hit for the upcoming season.

Mixon’s production took a step back last season when he rushed for 814 yards and seven touchdowns.

In 2021, he made the Pro Bowl and ran 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Off the field, Mixon has been embroiled in multiple controversies this offseason.

He is set to go to trial on Aug. 14 on an aggravated menacing charge, in which he was accused of waving a gun at a woman during an alleged January road rage incident, according to WLWT.

Mixon was also connected to an incident in March when shots were allegedly fired from his home at a group of teens, though no charges were filed against Mixon.

Shalonda Mixon, his sister, and boyfriend Lamonte Brewer both emerged as suspects in the incident, while Mixon wasn’t considered a suspect, according to ESPN.

The Bengals were rumored to ask the running back to take a pay cut or be released in April.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, the Bengals’ director of player personnel Duke Tobin suggested that Mixon may not return for the 2023 season.

“Joe has been a vital part of our team, He’s been a successful part of our team,” Tobin said. “Again, I’m not gonna predict the offseason because I don’t have the answers.”

The Bengals drafted Mixon in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 26-year-old signed a four-year, $48 million extension in 2020.
