The Browns are apparently scouring under every rock after Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.
Wednesday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters that Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a rookie out of UCLA selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, will start this Sunday versus the Steelers, getting the nod over P.J. Walker.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Browns are hosting a workout for quarterbacks, which includes veteran Joe Flacco.
Flacco, 38, started four games for the Jets last season.
Dating back to late 2018, the Jets, Broncos and Ravens were collectively 3-17 in the last 20 games started by Flacco.
Flacco, though, did have his best recent game in last season against the Browns, throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-30 miracle Jets comeback victory.
Meanwhile, Robert Griffin III, who last played in the NFL in 2020 on the Ravens, is campaigning for the job.
“The Browns should start me as quarterback,” Griffin, who played on the 2016 Browns team that went 1-15, recently said on his podcast, as covered by CBS Sports.
“One, at 33 years old, I understand the game better than I ever have in my entire career. I know how to slide, and I know when to slide. That was a huge issue in my eight years in the NFL. But I’ve learned. I’ve learned from my mistakes and I’m ready to showcase that I can get it done.”
Dating back to 2013, Griffin’s teams are 7-20 in his last 27 starts.
The Browns are 6-3 and would make the NFL playoffs as a wild card if the regular season ended today.
Earlier this week, an emotional Watson spoke about his mindset after the injury.
“It’s very tough,” he said, as covered by Cleveland.com.
“Hurt about it, but I’m going to make sure I keep my head above water and make sure I stay in touch with all the guys, and support them as much as I possibly can and attack this rehab process after surgery and make sure that I’m doing whatever I can to be beneficial for this team while not actually being on the field with them and also prepping for the next year.”
