J.J. Watt was every American golf fan when he texted Jon Rahm begging him to cool it against the Americans at the Ryder Cup. 

The former NFL star posted a screenshot of a text he sent to the Spaniard shortly after Rahm hit one of the most impressive shots of the tournament thus far. 

“JON. SETTLE. DOWN. This is getting ridiculous,” he wrote in the message, which was shared on X. 

The post on X followed a wild chip shot by Rahm on the eighth hole, where he hit the ball off the edge of the bunker and found its way into the cup to win the hole on Saturday morning at Bethpage Black.

The shot whipped the crowd into a frenzy and stifled the momentum the Americans had been building at that moment. Rahm and partner Tyrrell Hatton ended up besting Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay 3&2 in the morning four-ball sessions.

Rahm and Watt have been close friends for a while and have a well-known group chat that includes Zach Ertz. 

“Those two are amazing humans, first and foremost,” Ertz told ESPN of Watt and Rahm in a 2023 article. “They’re great people to be around, but we’re also three people that have very similar outlooks on life and are at very similar phases in life.”

In that piece, Watt described the friendship with Rahm and Ertz as “true friends.” 

“It’s a type of friend group that it’s true friends,” Watt said. “… I think the phrase goes like, ‘You always talk s— to your best friend’s face and you talk nice about them behind their back.’ That’s kind of what we do.”
