Jimmy Kimmel weighed in on the Grammy Awards, where several controversial figures walked the red carpet: namely Will Smith, Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori.
The Live host pointed out that Smith had been banned from attending the Academy Awards for 10 years after slapping Chris Rock on stage in 2022. But he was invited to the 67th Annual Grammy Awards to honor the late Quincy Jones, who was an executive producer on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
“It’s like they didn’t [care],” Kimmel said of the Grammys, before adding, “You know what’s a shame? Will Smith, all he had to do was run out on the red carpet and slap Kanye. I think all would have been forgiven.”
The Grammys marked the first major awards show appearance Smith has made since that infamous slap in 2022. The actor is currently barred from attending any events held by the Academy Awards, but he is still eligible to be nominated and receive an Oscar.
The late night host also took aim at the stunt West and his wife pulled on the Grammys red carpet.
Kimmel joked that Punxsutawney Phil was not the only “rodent” to come out of his cave this weekend. “Another rodent came out of his hole to hit the red carpet at the Grammys last night,” he joked.
The controversial couple posed together as Censori took her fur coat off to reveal a totally sheer mini-dress that left little — well, essentially nothing — to the imagination.
“This shows how much times have changed. Before Trump this would have been our whole monologue tonight. Now, it’s like the ninth craziest thing that happened this weekend,” Kimmel said. The late night host later did pivot to criticize the “world’s dumbest trader war” that Trump is starting.
He continued, “Remember how the whole country melted down when Janet Jackson’s boobs popped out for a millisecond? Now, a completely nude woman walks the red carpet at the Grammys and they’re going, ‘Bianca, over here! On the right!'”
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
