A new young heartthrob has entered the zeitgeist: UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione.
Jimmy Kimmel explained the bizarre phenomenon gripping the nation during Tuesday’s (Dec. 10) broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I’m not sure what this says about us but ever since these photos came out from his holding cell, from his mug shot… someone found his abs somewhere online,” he began. “So many women and so many men are going nuts over how good looking this killer is. There’s a huge wave of horny washing over us.”
The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate has seemingly taken the internet by storm since he arrested Monday in connection to the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“I have never experienced anything like this,” Kimmel added.
To illustrate his point, the late night host shared several screenshots taken from his staff members’ conversations with friends and relatives about Mangione.
In one exchange, a friend texted a Live staff member, “Please tell me you’re as obsessed as I am with this handsome CEO killer,” to which the Live staffer responded, “Yes!! So many questions.”
The friend then fired back, “Like, ‘Can I fix you?'”
In another exchange, a staffer’s husband said, “I’m about to be a jailhouse bride. Cause damn shorty is fooooiine.”
Another loved one said they were “texting all my friends in NY that I hope they get called to jury duty,” to which someone else responded, “god I want to do jury duty so bad.”
That exchange made even Kimmel chuckle as he noted, “Well at least it’s stirring up a passion for civic duty, I guess.”
Mangione was apprehended by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a resident noticed him acting “suspiciously,” per CBS News. After police found multiple fraudulent IDs, a gun, and a suppressor on his person, he was charged with forgery, firearms not to be carried without a license, possessing instruments of crime, tampering with records or identification, and false identification to law enforcement.
Kimmel already declared that we’ll likely be hearing about Mangione often over the next several months as he goes through trial. There’s also a chance that Ryan Murphy will adapt his life story into another Netflix series, just like Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
“Ryan Murphy right now is flying to Netflix headquarters in a jet pack,” Kimmel joked.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
