Jimmy Kimmel continued his tirade against “righteous” Republicans who have been criticizing President Joe Biden for pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, after insisting he would not.
Kimmel kicked off his opening monologue Tuesday (Dec. 3) with a jab at Donald Trump, who will be attending the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral this week. “If all goes according to plan he would like to buy it and turn it into a casino,” he joked.
But the late night host then set his sights of the Republicans at home who have been “exploding with pretend outrage” after President Biden pardoned Hunter.
“One of those who expressed righteous indignation is Senator John Cornyn of Texas who warned us of the longterm perils associated with a situation like this,” Kimmel said, queueing up a clip of Cornyn criticizing President Biden’s decision.
In the clip, Cornyn said President Biden’s pardon set a “terrible example.”
“Without any accountability for people breaking the law, getting a pass in other words, there is no deterrent effect or no accountability that teaches our young people and others that, yes, you need to follow the law and yes there are consequences if you don’t,” he explained.
Kimmel laughed at Cornyn’s statements. Though he didn’t specifically call it out during the broadcast, he pointed out earlier this week that, “Everyone who voted to let a 34-time convicted felon off the hook is very mad about Joe Biden letting his son off the hook.”
Earlier this year, Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments he made to Stormy Daniels during his campaign. But his sentencing was delayed indefinitely after he won the presidential election.
“People say politicians have no sense of humor,” Kimmel said of the Republicans’ criticisms with a laugh during Tuesday’s broadcast. “These guys have seriously got to be kidding with this. I don’t think I can take it. And they do it with a straight face over and over again!”
Kimmel also recently pointed out that Trump appointed someone who he once pardoned to his cabinet – his son-in-law’s father, Charles Kushner.
“Not only did Trump pardon his son-in-law Jared’s dad who went to prison for hiring a hooker to frame his brother-in-law, [but] this weekend he named that same man U.S. ambassador to France,” Kimmel explained.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
