NextImg:Jim Harbaugh getting second Chargers interview as NFL interest picks up

Things appear to be getting serious between Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers.

The Michigan coach will be the team’s first head coach candidate to get a second interview this week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This is the second team he is scheduled for a second interview with, as the Falcons are doing the same.

Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick is looming as a top candidate for the Falcons job also.

The Chargers, however, were the first team the former NFL QB was linked to as he decides whether to return to the NFL or lead the Wolverines in the defense of their national championship as the school hopes to sign him to an extension.

Los Angeles, which has interviewed 15 candidates, is looking for new leadership at the top after firing head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco in December.

The team finished a dismal 5-12 after making the playoffs a year ago.

The Chargers have also interviewed former NFL head coaches Raheem Morris, Steve Wilks, Leslie Frazier, Mike Vrabel and Dan Quinn.

The 60-year-old Harbaugh, who spent the final two seasons of his 14-year NFL career with the Chargers, is a proven winner

He had a 44-19-1 record with a Super Bowl appearance during his tenure as 49ers head coach from 2011-14 and a 118-46 record during 13 seasons as a college coach.

The Chargers offer him a team with a talented roster led by one of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks in Justin Herbert, who underachieved with Staley at the helm.

Though Michigan claimed an undefeated national title, last season wasn’t without drama.

Harbaugh was suspended for six of the Wolverines’ games.

The first three were due to alleged recruiting violations and the latter three because of a sign-stealing scheme orchestrated by former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions.
