Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar, who are the subject of Amazon Prime Video’s Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, have issued a response on their website condemning the docuseries about their family, which premiered today.

“The recent ‘documentary’ that talks about our family is sad because in it we see the media and those with ill intentions hurting people we love,” the statement reads. “Like other families, ours too has experienced the joys and heartbreaks of life, just in a very public format.”

The Duggars claimed in their statement that the docuseries “paints so much and so many in a derogatory and sensationalized way because sadly that’s the direction of entertainment these days.”

The Duggar family made their name on the 2008 TLC series 19 Kids and Counting, which chronicled the devoutly religious family’s life in Arkansas.

Prime Video’s newly released docuseries sets out to examine some of the Duggar children’s experiences being raised in the Institute in Basic Life Principles. One of the subjects interviewed is Jill Duggar Dillard, the second-oldest Duggar daughter. The fourth and final episode of the series dives into how the eldest son, Josh Duggar, abused four of his nine sisters, including Jill.

In 2015, Jim Bob and Michelle confirmed that Josh inappropriately touched four of his sisters and one babysitter. Josh was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2022 after he was found guilty of receiving and possessing child pornography.

Despite the fact that their children and family friends participated in the docuseries, Jim Bob and Michelle refused to participate. The docuseries instead included a statement issued by the couple, saying, “[They] love each of their children tremendously and always desire each live their god-designed lives to the fullest.”

“We have always believed that the best chance to repair damaged relationships, or to reconcile differences, is through love in a private setting,” Jim Bob and Michelle wrote in their statement. “We love every member of our family and will continue to do all we can to have a good relationship with each one.”

Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets is now streaming on Prime Video.
