The Jets will get a little reprieve in their season opener against the Bills.
The Bills kept Von Miller on the physically unable to perform list, according to multiple reports, which means he’ll miss the first four games of the season — including the opener against the Jets.
Miller tore his ACL on Thanksgiving last season during a game against the Lions, but he had held out hope that he would be able to make it back for the Week 1 showdown.
Miller signed a six-year deal with Buffalo before the 2022 season, and despite the injury, he finished the year tied for the team lead in sacks with eight and led the Bills in pressures with 38.
The 34-year-old linebacker’s 23.6 percent pass rush rating and 14.5 pressure percentage were tops on Buffalo.
The Jets get to avoid Miller, who, during his last trip to MetLife Stadium on Nov. 6, recorded a strip sack of Zach Wilson in a 20-17 Jets win.
Over the course of Miller’s six career games against Gang Green, he has recorded 6.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, three passes defended and 10 tackles for loss.
Miller’s presence on the field made the Bills one of the tougher pass rushes in the league,
Without him, however, the team’s defense takes a big hit.
Last year, Buffalo was ranked fourth in pressure rate while blitzing at the fourth lowest rate with Miller playing, per NFL analyst Warren Sharp.
But without the three-time All-Pro, the Bills were 24th in pressure rate but blitzed at the 13th-highest rate.
The Buffalo defender had remained with the team throughout training camp and was seen working off to the side during practices.
The Bills are being cautious with Miller in order to get him back as soon as they can.
“We want to make sure he’s ready for the long haul. We don’t want to rush him too much,” general manager Brandon Beane told reporters in July.
It’s unclear when Miller will be ready to return, but the Jets may not get lucky twice this season with a second matchup with the Bills in Buffalo on Nov. 19.
