If Breece Hall is going to achieve his goal of becoming an All-Pro running back in 2024, he will do it with a new coach in his ear.
The Jets are parting ways with Taylor Embree, The Post confirmed, and the search for a new running backs coach already is underway.
Embree coached the position for three years as a member of head coach Robert Saleh’s original staff, after the two overlapped for three years as 49ers assistants.
Panthers assistant head coach and running backs coach Duce Staley met with the Jets last week about a spot on the staff, and the Titans’ Tony Dews will interview for the vacancy after coaching tight ends last season, according to ESPN.
Staley – the former 1,000-yard rusher for the Eagles – is reportedly also a candidate to coach the Browns running backs.
Dews has ties to the Jets staff as a former colleague of passing game coordinator Todd Downing and offensive line coach/run game coordinator Keith Carter when all three were with the Titans.
Dews was the running backs coach from 2018-22 – the best seasons of workhorse Derrick Henry’s career.
Hall developed into one of the NFL’s best running backs in two years under Embree, coming back strong from a torn ACL suffered as a rookie to rush for 4.5 yards per carry and finish just shy of 1,000 yards this season.
When the 2023 Pro Bowlers were announced, Hall declared on X, “Telling y’all now 2024: I will be a Top RB. I Will be in the Pro Bowl. I Will be an All Pro. And it will continue years after that.”
Embree and then-Jets running back Michael Carter had a televised sideline spat during a Week 3 loss to the Patriots.
Carter, who was released later in the season, explained postgame that it was just a case of on-field frustrations boiling over and said Embree was “a big part of the reason I’m even a Jet” because he was “probably beating on the table for me in the draft.”
It is possible that the Jets could make more changes, especially on the offensive side, as other NFL coaching staffs take shape around five remaining head coach vacancies and more assistants become available.
