The Jets weren’t kidding about wanting to add experience at defensive tackle.
Thirteen-year journeyman Al Woods, 36, reportedly will take a free-agent visit to the team facility this week.
He also is scheduled to visit with the Browns.
After losing Nathan Shepherd (Saints) and Sheldon Rankins (Texans) in free agency, the Jets were spurned by Fletcher Cox, who decided to return to the Eagles where he has played his entire career.
Woods would alleviate the need for another run-stuffer, but he doesn’t offer much interior pass rush (nine career sacks).
It’s been a long, strange road for Woods, who is just behind Cox and outside of the top 50 among active players with 155 career games played since entering the league at the same time that the Jets last made the playoffs in 2010.
But it took Woods four seasons and three teams to earn his first career start and he seems to only be playing a bigger role as his career continues.
All but 19 of Woods’ 78 career starts have come in the past five seasons, including 30 over the last two seasons with the Seahawks.
He was the NFL’s No. 32-ranked defensive tackle last season, per Pro Football Focus.
The Jets’ philosophy is to use a deep defensive line rotation to maintain fresh legs in the fourth quarter.
Eight defensive linemen, including Shepherd and Rankins, played between 311-690 snaps last season.
The Jets re-signed Solomon Thomas but haven’t yet extended their top defensive force, Quinnen Williams, who is seeking a new contract.
Woods’ next team will be his sixth.
