NextImg:Jets’ Sauce Gardner, Quincy Williams earn First Team All-Pro honors

After being snubbed for the Pro Bowl, Jets linebacker Quincy Williams received a more important accolade Friday.

And star cornerback Sauce Gardner made history.

Both were named First-Team All-Pros this year, the only Jets to be named to any of the All-Pro teams.

It marked the first of Williams’ career, and the second time in his first two seasons that Gardner earned the honor.

Gardner is the NFL’s first cornerback since 1970 to be named to the First Team All-Pro team in each of his first two seasons.

He’s also one of just seven Jets to make it multiple times.

Last year, Gardner became the first cornerback since Ronnie Lott in 1981 with the recognition, and this year he followed up with another dominant performance.

Gardner was Pro Football Focus’ third-best graded cornerback this year, with an 88.6 overall grade. He was targeted just 55 times this year, according to Pro Football Reference, and recorded 11 passes defended and 57 total tackles.

Williams, the brother of Jets’ star defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, enjoyed a breakout season, his third with the Jets signed him after being cut by the Jaguars.

He recorded 139 total tackles, two sacks and 15 tackles for loss. He was PFF’s sixth-highest graded linebacker with an 81.1 overall grade.

He expressed at the end of the regular season his disappointment in not making the Pro Bowl team.

“The biggest thing is, I wanted to grow from last year and the years before,” Williams said last week. “I honestly feel like I got that. The main thing I’ve been telling people the destination is the Pro Bowl, that’s still the destination. …. I didn’t get to that destination this year, but the goal is still gonna be the same for next year.

“The journey was good. Going week after week, performing well, it was huge.”
