NextImg:Jets release Michael Carter in first sign of offensive changes

The Jets released running back Michael Carter on Tuesday, the team announced, after Robert Saleh said the team was looking into changes for the offense.

The third-year rusher had eight carries for 38 yards and 15 receptions for 68 yards across nine games during the 2023 season.

In Sunday’s 16-12 loss to the Raiders, Carter did not record a rushing attempt and failed to catch his lone target.

A fourth-round pick out of North Carolina in the 2021 NFL Draft, Carter averaged 4.3 yards per carry as a rookie, but struggled in his second season with the Jets, falling to just 3.5 yards per carry as Breece Hall broke out as the lead rusher.

The 24-year-old was further pushed down the depth chart when the Jets signed Dalvin Cook before the 2023 season began.

Carter’s release likely means more work for rookie Israel Abanikanda.
