DENVER — Michael Carter II has a knack for making big interceptions … that then get nullified by a penalty.
It looked like Carter was going to give the Jets’ offense a chance to win the game last week against the Chiefs when he intercepted Patrick Mahomes with 4:19 left in the game.
But the officials called holding on Jets corner Sauce Gardner and Carter’s dramatic moment was not to be.
When did he realize the flag had been thrown?
“Probably like realized it as I got tackled,” Carter said this past week. “I don’t know. It just felt kind of weird. There wasn’t much celebration. I probably peeped it when I finally got back up and I was like, ‘Dang, well I’ve got to go back out there.’ ”
This is not the first time Carter has been robbed of a big moment by the officials.
Last year, Carter intercepted Patriots quarterback Mac Jones just before halftime and returned it for a touchdown at MetLife Stadium only to have the play wiped out by a roughing the passer call on defensive end John Franklin-Myers.
Carter said he did not think about last year’s call in the moment but it did cross his mind later.
“I was focused on getting off the field,” Carter said. “The drive was super long. I didn’t think about it until after the game. It was like, ‘Damn, that’s the second time.’ It is what it is.”
The Jets’ defense has been victimized by some big plays this season. In their past two games, the Jets have given up touchdowns of 34, 48 and 58 yards.
The Jets know they have to cut down on the explosive plays.
“No ‘except for’ plays, you know? Those are the ones that are killing us right now,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said. “With New England, it was the one seams, the flat seven, and this past week, it was the one botched man coverage and the short-yardage play, and we can’t have those if we want to be the defense we want to be.”
The Jets elevated WR Irv Charles and CB Craig James from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
