The Jets hope to close the season on a high note after what has proved to be a roller coaster of another losing year.
But the finale against the Patriots won’t come without a lot of respect for head coach Bill Belichick.
There has been much speculation about whether Sunday’s game will be Belichick’s last after what is a career-worst 4-12 season.
He’s been under fire throughout the season and has a meeting scheduled with owner Robert Kraft and team president Jonathan Kraft on Monday following the matchup.
Yet the season mark isn’t what comes to mind for the Jets.
Belichick’s legacy goes above all else.
“Obviously, a legend in the game and one of the all-time great coaches,” Garrett Wilson said after Friday’s practice. “I didn’t know that. Is that what they’re saying, it’s his last game?
“That’s sad, for real.”
But the threat of his formidable defense isn’t too far behind.

The Jets will be stacked against a legend with a 302-164 overall record across an almost 29-year coaching career (24 with New England and five with Cleveland) that featured six Super Bowl wins.
Belichick’s defense is one that Wilson and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett see as a multi-threat.
“He’s [Belichick] so multiple, he finds guys that fit that. The guys are multiple, like Jabrill Peppers. They can do everything. You can put them in the box, you can put them in the back, even come up and play on the line,” Wilson said. “It’s a defense that’s really multiple and they do a really good job. When you’re that multiple, it gives you a lot to worry about as an offense. You have to account for all those looks, try and practice for all those looks during the week and it might take away from some of the things you really want to be good at, the fundamentals.
“And I think that’s maybe their mindset on it, give you a lot of things to worry about. As far as how they play, they play with their hair on fire and it’ll be a great game. They got a great defense and every time we go up against them, it’s a great matchup.”
Hackett agreed Wednesday, saying Belichick presents “a lot” of possible obstacles.
“We all know he’s a brilliant coach in this league. One of the best, if not the best, to ever coach. So much respect for him and everything that he’s accomplished,” Hackett said. “He has done such a great job with doing the same things for the players, but just causing so much confusion with the different personnel groupings. … Sometimes guys are playing DB, sometimes they are playing linebacker, sometimes they’re playing defensive line, so I think it’s just things that we all have to lock in and communicate throughout this whole game.”
The Patriots rank sixth in yards allowed in the league at 304.6, just behind the Jets (303.1).
Peppers has tallied a career-high two interceptions for 34 yards along with one forced fumble, two quarterback hits and 76 combined tackles.
Belichick has also had the Jets number for the past 15 matchups, the Jets’ most-recent win in the series coming Dec. 27, 2015 in a 26-20 overtime win in Week 16.
The Jets have not won in Foxborough, Mass., since their AFC divisional-round matchup Jan. 16, 2011.
If Belichick leads the Patriots to a win, it would mark the team’s most consecutive wins over any opponent.
“We’re gonna come out there and try to win the game. Period. I definitely want to be respectful of what they have going on as far as post game and stuff like that. I don’t know. But we are gonna come out there with something to prove,” Wilson said. “It wouldn’t matter who’s across from us. It happens to be the Patriots and it happens to be that they’ve won most of the matches with us. So, we got to end the dry spell and if it is his last game coaching, like I said, that’s a legend leaving the game and I’m excited to be out there with him.”
