The Jets still haven’t made a decision on their kicker for Thursday’s game, but they officially started the competition — to “create some stress,” as head coach Jeff Ulrbich called it — on Tuesday.
Cade York, Riley Patterson, Spencer Shrader, Andre Szmyt, Zane Gonzalez and Brayden Narveson worked out for the Jets, according to the NFL Network, after Greg Zuerlein’s rough season potentially reached a breaking point with another missed extra point and another missed field goal during their 25-22 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.
The former Pro Bowler — an accurate kicker throughout his 13-year NFL career — has already missed six field goals this season, along with the one extra point, and holds the worst field goal percentage in the NFL among kickers with more than two attempts in 2024.
So that prompted the Jets, who continued to back Zuerlein up until this point and hadn’t brought in kickers to work out, to at least consider a change entering their “Thursday Night Football” matchup with the Texans.
York and Narveson are the only two who have kicked in a game this season.
Gang Green brought the kickers to MetLife Stadium for the tryout.
Ulbrich said the competition would continue into Wednesday with all six kickers before deciding on their best option for Thursday, and that, at least for now, could still be Zuerlein.
