The Jets are in the air to meet with Aaron Rodgers.
A contingent of team officials boarded owner Woody Johnson’s private plane to meet with Rodgers in California, according to a report from ESPN.
The Packers granted the Jets permission to speak with Rodgers, and the initial conversations reportedly happened Monday.
Rodgers already knows offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett through their three seasons together as quarterback and assistant coach with the Packers.
He somewhat knows head coach Robert Saleh through Saleh’s close friendship with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
But two of the key figures, Johnson and general manager Joe Douglas, would be new bedfellows for Rodgers as he weighs retirement or changing teams after 18 seasons in Green Bay.
All signs are that the Packers are ready to move forward with fourth-year pro Jordan Love as Rodgers’ successor.
It is reminiscent of 15 years ago, when the Jets courted Rodgers’ predecessor with the Packers, Brett Favre, before executing a trade to bring him to New York for one season.
Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, seems to be on board, promising on Twitter to “burn the cheesehead” that he took with him after the Jets beat Rodgers in Green Bay last season.
