The Jets likely won’t know who their starting quarterback against Washington will be until late in the week.
Zach Wilson is in the concussion protocol after getting abused in Sunday’s 30-0 loss to the Dolphins.
Jets coach Robert Saleh said Wilson will be his starter on Sunday if he gets cleared.
If he can’t play, Trevor Siemian would be the starter.
There are six steps in the concussion protocol that a player has to clear before he is allowed to play. T
wo of those steps are returning to practice on a limited basis and then for a full practice.
So, if Wilson is not back on the field in some capacity by Thursday, it won’t look good for him playing.
There were some tough words from Jets players following Sunday’s game.
Wide receiver Allen Lazard said the team was “out-schemed and out-efforted,” which is damning for the coaching staff.
Saleh was asked about that comment and others from the postgame locker room.
“They’re warranted,” Saleh said. “Obviously, we didn’t coach it well enough and we didn’t execute it well enough. All the way across the board, it wasn’t good enough in all three phases. Anytime you lose 30-0, throw a dart at the dartboard and you can pick a reason. At the end of the day, starting with me all the way down, we’ve got to be better.”
Saleh failed to put the blame on himself Sunday but he did several times during his session with reporters Monday.
“In my heart, I feel like we built a championship roster,” Saleh said. “At the end of the day, we’ve still got to find ways to win with the guys who are on the football field. We’ve got to be better as coaches. We’ve got to be better as players.”
Saleh was asked if he is worried about his job.
“Just coaching to try to beat Washington,” Saleh said. “Two types of coaches, those who have been fired and those who are about to get fired. We coach in the moment. We coach to win a football game.”
DT Quinton Jefferson suffered a hip injury Sunday and Saleh said “it doesn’t look good” for him to play this week.
