NextImg:Jets decline Mekhi Becton’s fifth-year option

The Jets made a choice that seemed obvious on Tuesday and declined the fifth-year option for tackle Mekhi Becton, according to a source.

Becton, the mammoth tackle the Jets selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has only played in 15 games in three years and just one in the last two seasons.

The 24-year-old has been sidelined by knee injuries in each of the last two seasons.

The option for 2024 would have cost the Jets a fully guaranteed $13.575 million, way too much to give to a player who has not been able to stay on the field during his career.

Becton will be scheduled to become a free agent after the upcoming season.

Becton has lost more than 50 pounds this offseason and is expected to compete for one of the starting tackle spots.

The Jets selected Becton with the No. 11 overall pick in 2020.

He was dominant at times as a rookie but had several nagging injuries that slowed him down in that season.

In 2021, he injured his knee in the first game of the season and required season-ending surgery.

He came back in 2022 and was expected to start at right tackle but injured his knee early in training camp and again needed surgery that kept him out for the whole year.
