Jessica Simpson‘s rendition of “These Boots Are Made For Walking” has certainly got people talking.
On Sunday night’s (May 18) Season 23 finale of American Idol, Simpson sang some of her new song “Blame Me” prior to taking on her 2005 take on the Nancy Sinatra classic with Top 8 finalist Josh King, per People. According to the outlet, this marked Simpson’s first performance on TV in 15 years.
Fans online praised her “comeback,” with some claiming they “only” tuned in last night for her performance. However, others were much harsher on Simpson, with critics writing on X that she “sounded awful.”
“I was embarrassed watching Jessica Simpson’s performance,” one wrote.
“Update… Jessica Simpson and Josh singing these boots are made for walking is the most cringe thing I’ve seen,” another chimed in.
One even went so far as to call her “an absolute train wreck.”
Nonetheless, Simpson, who released her album Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1 in March, basked in the support she received from her 13-year-old daughter Maxwell on her Instagram story on Monday, writing that Maxwell had “never seen” her singing on live television and cited “her pure pride, love and support” as “the reason” she is back on the stage.
“Mommy LOVES you!” she continued. “You are my guidin’ light forever for always. I am strong because of you my sweet daughter.”
Jamal Roberts bested fellow contestants John Foster and Breanna Nix was named the winner on last night’s Season 23 finale. Roberts, who got the chance to perform with Jelly Roll, took to Instagram following his victory, thanking fans in a heartfelt post. Judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan each shared their own posts congratulating the show’s latest winner, as well as host Ryan Seacrest.
