Former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson is finally headed into the organization’s Ring of Honor.
The two-time Super Bowl-winning coach will be inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor on Dec. 30, team owner Jerry Jones announced on “Fox NFL Sunday.”
“I will say this: Magical, the time we’ve had together,” Jones said. “I want you to know something. On December 30, 1923, you’re going in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor.”
Johnson quickly corrected Jones, stating, “It’s 2023,” with a laugh, while clapping a hand on his back.
When Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989, he took Johnson under his wing as his first head coach.
In his five seasons at the helm in Dallas (1989-93), Johnson delivered back-to-back Super Bowl wins over the Bills in 1992 and 1993.
He finished his career as Cowboys coach with a 44-36 record and a 7-1 postseason record.
Johnson later served as the Dolphins’ coach from 1996-99.
It was always a question of when Johnson would be inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor amid his speculated feud with Jones.
Jones initially promised Johnson a spot in the team’s Ring of Honor more than two years ago, to which the latter replied at the time, “While I’m alive?”
Jones has defended his delay in the past, saying, “There’s a lot more than Jimmy to think about here.”
“I’ve got a lot of other lives out here that have laid a lot on the line on the field that need to be in that Ring of Honor as well,” Jones told NBC Dallas/Fort Worth in 2022. “And so how I do that, what I do it with, I get to make that decision. And it isn’t at the end of the day all tailored around whether Jimmy is sniveling or not.”
Johnson will be Dallas’ 24th inductee into the Ring of Honor.
He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2021 and was named an NFL Coach of the Year in 1990.
The ceremony will be held during halftime of the Cowboys’ Week 17 matchup against the Lions.
