It’s not often that an episode of Jeopardy! can make viewers emotional, but on Tuesday night’s episode of Jeopardy! Masters, contestant Mattea Roach took a moment to discuss their late father, Phillip, who passed away on May 2, in a tender, touching tribute.
While speaking with the show’s contestants, who also included fellow masters Matt Amodio and Andrew He, host Ken Jennings asked Roach, “In your very first appearance on Jeopardy!, we asked you what your most prized possession was, and you mentioned a denim jacket on extended loan from your dad, right?”
Roach, who uses they/them pronouns, responded, “Well, it’s now on permanent loan. Unfortunately, my dad actually passed away at the start of the month very suddenly.”
They continued, “He’s a huge part of the reason why I’m here he and my mom instilled an early love of geography in me my dad taught me all about Turner Classic Movies and old music and all sorts of things.”
“I wanted to, in what might be my last game of the series, recognize the impact he had on my life, and also recognize I was actually here at set when my dad died,” Roach explained, adding that everyone, from the show’s crew to her fellow competitors, was nothing but supportive when they learned of the tragedy.
“I could not have asked for better support going through what is the worst day of my life pretty much so far,” Roach said, adding, “My whole family is so thankful for everyone here at Jeopardy! for helping us through this really difficult time.”
“Speaking as a dad, I can only guess at how proud he must have been of you and I’m so glad he had the chance to see you play,” Jennings told Roach after the emotional reveal.
