Jeopardy fans found themselves divided after a recent episode showed a contestant bet it all after she appeared to misunderstand the Final Jeopardy clue.
Sophia Weng, a senior from Harvard University, found herself in second place with $14,600 in earnings when the Final Jeopardy clue came up.
It read, “During Pope John Paul II’s 1987 visit to Los Angeles, pranksters covered up this letter in a local landmark.”
The correct answer was “What is L?” But Weng appeared to misunderstand what the question was asking, as she instead wrote, “What is the Hollywood sign?” and bet $14,201 on her answer, bringing her earnings down to $399.
Host Ken Jennings delivered the bad news: “You got the right landmark but didn’t tell us the letter, I’m afraid.”
Many fans at home sympathized with Weng over the major loss, while others acknowledged that she did not understand what the clue was asking.

“Sophia got absolutely robbed on @Jeopardy! tn. The category was landmarks not letters!!!” one viewer wrote.
“Poor Sophia on Jeopardy tonight misunderstood what the final clue was asking for, and probably lost because of it,” another fan wrote.
“I died inside watching Sophia Weng misunderstand the final question on jeopardy,” another viewer commented. “She woulda won if she read it right.”
Her opponent, Sharon Bishop, won that round, but it was Michael Cavaliere who walked away the victor with $28,300. Had Weng answered it correctly, she could have narrowly won the episode with the amount that she bet.
