Life is full of crazy coincidences, some that could even save your life. This seems to be the case for Sam Buttrey, a Jeopardy! fan-favorite contestant (who just happens to look a lot like actor Steve Martin).

As seen in a viral TikTok, Buttrey shared during his appearance on Jeopardy! Masters last month that he had intended to embark on an undersea tour of the Titanic wreck, one that chillingly resembles the OceanGate sub tour that has been missing at sea since Sunday (June 18), per Yahoo! Entertainment.

Buttrey revealed his deep sea trip that never was when host Ken Jennings asked the Naval Graduate School associate professor about his own “nautical story.”

Jennings asked, “You went to your own son’s wedding, but at great cost, is that right?,” to which Buttrey replied, “That’s right, KJ. I have a friend who operates a company that will take you out to the wreck of the Titanic. So you go out in a boat, and then you go down in a submersible craft and tour the wreckage.”

What Buttrey described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” was prevented by a “miracle of bad timing.”

“My son John and daughter-in-law Caitlyn were getting married that weekend,” he explained. “I was very happy to go there. It was a beautiful wedding, and not a shred of regret in my life.”

Buttrey, who first competed on the show in 2021 in the Professor’s Tournament, placed second runner-up in the 2022 Tournament of Champions, and sixth in his most recent Jeopardy! Masters showing, per Yahoo! Entertainment.

Fans on Twitter are sharing how grateful they are for the game show champ’s safety and that they “simply cannot believe” that he could have been on the missing OceanGate submersible, Titan.

Jeopardy airs weeknights at 7/6c. Check the Jeopardy website for local listings.
