These Jeopardy! contestants might have been just a little out of their league with a particular category thrown their way.
Tony Freitas, Mason Maggio, and Yoshie Hill vied for the victory on Thursday night’s (Oct. 27) episode, and were presented with the “Hall Of Famer By Position” category, which involved host Ken Jennings naming two to three famous athletes who held the same position in a certain sport.
Maggio scored the answer to the $400 prompt of “Joe Namath, Joe Montana,” which warranted the correct response of “What is quarterback?”
Things went afoul when Maggio selected the $800 question, which was “Bill Russell [and] Bill Walton.” None of the three contestants attempted to answer prior to Jennings sharing that the two are “basketball centers.”
The next question highlighted “Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, [and] Bob Gibson,” three baseball pitchers who, once again, the contestants didn’t dare to take a swing at.
“This might be a long category,” Jennings quipped.
As Maggio chose the $1,600 query, Jennings joked, “Hey sports fans, I believe in you!”
“Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, John Stallworth,” he continued, but was met with silence again, before adding, “They are wide receivers.”
He then uncovered the final question of the category, which revealed the names “Gump Worsley, Shrimp Worters, [and] Rat Westwick.”
The contestants and audience began to laugh, presumably at the fairly unique names of the athletes selected. Following another round of no guesses, Jennings chimed in to quip, “It just sounds like I’m making people up, these are hockey goalies — ice hockey goalies.”
Nonetheless, Hill, who played in the late Alex Trebek‘s final episode, per TheJeopardyFan.com, ultimately took home the win, correctly answering the Final Jeopardy question in the “Famous Families” category.
This just proves we all have our strengths!
