Jeopardy has finally shed some light on how the game show is planning to proceed amid the ongoing writers strike.

After contestant Ray LaLonde shared a statement on Reddit announcing that he would not participate in the annual Tournament of Champions if the WGA strike continues, a Jeopardy spokesperson shared a statement regarding their plans moving forward.

Jeopardy! never had any intention of producing a Tournament of Champions for Season 39 until the strike is resolved,” a spokesperson said, per Deadline.

The spokesperson also stated that no contestants from Season 39 have been contacted to film any post-season tournaments.

“We have always been careful to honor our WGA agreements and we would never air game material not created by WGA writers,” the spokesperson added. The show employs WGA writers to write the clues.

The show’s statement also mentioned they will proceed with production for the new season using material that was written before the strike. It also teases that more news will be coming next month regarding “exciting plans and enhancements to the contestant experience.”

“However, just as we did, led by Alex Trebek, during the 2007-2008 strike, we will deliver first-run episodes again this fall to more than 200 affiliate stations nationwide,” the statement notes. “Our current plan is to go into a holding pattern of sorts, pushing back the S39 postseason to first produce original episodes featuring the best of our WGA written material.”

This statement was released on Tuesday (July 25) after LaLonde and other game show contestants publicly agreed not to participate in this year’s Tournament of Champions out of support for the writers strike.

“As a supporter of the trade union movement, a union member’s son and a proud union member myself I have informed the show’s producers that if the strike remains unresolved I will not cross a picket line to play in the Tournament of Champions,” LaLonde wrote. The 13-game winner is an IATSE member and a scenic designer.

Former contestants Chris Pannullo, Ben Chan, and Hannah Wilson all agreed with LaLonde’s stance and voiced their own support. The four players make up the top four contestants who qualified for the 2023 Tournament of Champions.

Actor and writer Ike Barinholtz also qualified for the Tournament after winning Celebrity Jeopardy, but Variety notes that his involvement in both SAG-AFTRA and WGA will prevent him from participating.

Jeopardy co-host Mayim Bialik also stepped away from filming the final week of episodes for Season 39, prompting Ken Jennings to fill in for her.

It is unclear when she will be returning if production for Jeopardy Season 40 begins.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights at 7/6c. Check the website for local listings.
