Ayo Edebiri apologized to Jennifer Lopez after calling her career a “scam,” Lopez revealed.
In a new interview with Variety published on Tuesday, Lopez, 54, said that the Emmy-winning “The Bear” star, 28, “Was mortified and very sweet” when she apologized for her earlier comments.
The two filmed the Feb. 3 episode of “Saturday Night Live” together, where Edebiri hosted, and Lopez was the musical guest.
“She came to my dressing room and apologized with tears in her eyes, saying how terrible it was that she had said those things,” Lopez said of the moment that occurred while they were on “SNL” earlier in the month. “She felt really badly and loved my performance because we had just done my soundcheck and she actually got to hear me perform. She was just like, ‘I’m so f–king sorry, it was so awful of me.’”
The resurfaced comments were from a 2020 “Scam Goddess” podcast episode.
In the episode, Edebiri said that J.Lo’s career is one long scam.
“I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs…A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio.’ Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”
R&B singer Ashanti has previously claimed that her reference track vocals were passed off as Mrs. Ben Affleck’s in Lopez’s remixed tracks “I’m Real” and “Ain’t it Funny. “
Edebiri rose to fame in 2022 with her Emmy and Golden Globe-winning role as Sydney Adamu on the Hulu restaurant comedy-drama “The Bear,” co-starring Jeremy Allen White. She was also a writer and voice actor on the animated series “Big Mouth” and starred in the 2023 comedy “Bottoms.”
In 2020, at the time that she made her remarks about Lopez, she’d worked on the AppleTV+ series “Dickinson,” but she was still a relative unknown and hadn’t yet had her breakthrough on “The Bear.”
Regarding Edebiri’s comments, Lopez, who married Ben Affleck in 2022, twenty years after rekindling their old romance, said, “It’s funny. I’ve heard similar things said about me throughout my career, so it really didn’t affect me.”
Edebiri seemingly addressed her comments on one of the “SNL” sketches during the Feb. 3 episode.
In the sketch, a game show hosted by Kenan Thompson called “Why’d Ya Say It?,” her character said, “It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid.”
