Kathie Lee Gifford can dish it, but can she take it?

Jenna Bush Hager threw some shade at Hoda Kotb‘s former co-host on Today With Hoda & Jenna on Monday when she pointed out that the daytime hosts used to drink wine on the morning broadcast before she joined the show.

Kotb and Bush Hager were speaking to Based On A True Story star Kaley Cuoco about Season 2 of her Peacock show, which features one scene where her character is drinking wine as soon as she wakes up.

“Hoda used to do that with Kathie Lee,” Bush Hager mentioned. “I came in and classed this place up. Can you believe it?”

Kotb did not deny it. “She sure did,” she said with a laugh.

It’s certainly true: Gifford and Kotb regularly drank wine and cocktails on the 10 a.m. broadcast. In fact, on Gifford’s last day on the show in 2019, it was revealed that they drank a total of 5,300 glasses of wine over their 11 years co-hosting together, according to People.

But Bush Hager’s joke comes as no surprise to those familiar with Gifford’s personality. The former daytime host is known for her tough sense of humor, which has landed her in some hot water before — though Bush Hager has said this is just Gifford’s “love language.”

On the same broadcast, Bush Hager also joked that her grandmother “prepared” her for Gifford.

“My grandmother actually was so herself that sometimes it was scary. She would say things and you would be like, ‘Oh my gosh, that kind of hurt my feelings,'” she confessed to Kotb. “But anyway, she prepared me for Kathie Lee, because Kathie Lee is totally herself.”

Gifford has returned to the show several times since Bush Hager took over as her successor in 2019. During one of her more recent appearances, she kept ribbing Bush Hager during the broadcast, prompting Bush Hager to preemptively defend her against critics.

“Y’all, she likes me, this is her love language. I promise she likes me,” Bush Hager told viewers after Gifford once again ridiculed her on the show.

Gifford gave her a hug and revealed that she’s previously received criticism for how she jokes with Bush Hager.

“I adore her. I know! I got some nasty mail last time,” she said. “I adore Jenna! Back off, Barbies.”
