Break ups are hard, but, according to Today hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb, some places should be kept sacred.

During Friday’s (Feb. 16) broadcast, the hosts discussed a recently released article from the New York Times titled, “When the Breakup Ruins Your Favorite Restaurant,” which stirred up quite the debate.

“People say do it in public so it’s not so crazy but I don’t agree,” Kotb stated.

Bush Hager shared a hilarious response that made Kotb and their Today stage crew laugh: “No, because that’s so mean, you’re right. You can never go to Chili’s again because that queso that used to be so delicious reminds you of heartbreak and tears.”

Both hosts claimed they had never broken up with someone, or been broken up with, inside of a restaurant. But returning to a “date spot” can hurt just as much as returning to the restaurant you were once dumped at, Bush Hager said.

She admitted that the chain restaurant Houston’s often reminds her of a past relationship she was once in.

“I’m over it now because it’s been 20 years, but for a minute I couldn’t eat that spinach and artichoke dip without a pang in my heart,” she told Kotb.

Kotb appeared to agree. “Because you remember having intimate conversations, shared moments, you’re sitting in the same table that was our table,” she said. “Yes, I’ve had that.”

The co-hosts have openly discussed the highs and lows of their dating lives on the show. In one episode last year, Bush Hager admitted she almost got a Destiny’s Child tattoo while getting over a “terrible” breakup.

“The Destiny’s Child song was popular [at the time],” Bush Hager explained, much to Kotb’s surprise.

“We actually went to the tattoo parlor on 6th Street and thank you, Jesus, it was closed. Imagine me with ‘Survivor’ tattooed on my back?” she said

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
